Day 1: Addis Ababa
Arrive in Addis Ababa and settle into your hotel. Take the rest of the day to explore the city, visiting landmarks like the National Museum, Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Merkato, one of the largest open-air markets in Africa.
Day 2: Addis Ababa to Bale Mountains NP
Leave Addis Ababa early in the morning and drive to Bale Mountains National Park. The drive is about 400 km and takes around 9 hours. Stop for lunch in Shashemene, a town with a significant Rastafarian population. Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon and rest, or take a short hike to explore the area.
Day 3: Sanetti Plateau
Wake up early to drive to the Sanetti Plateau, the highest point in the park. Look for rare and endemic wildlife such as the Ethiopian wolf and the Bale monkey. Walk along the plateau, stopping to take in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Day 4: Harenna Forest
Drive to the Harenna Forest, one of the largest and most biodiverse forests in Ethiopia. Hike through the forest, looking for bird species like the Abyssinian catbird and the white-cheeked turaco. Visit the Bale Mountains Lodge for lunch, then continue hiking through the forest.
Day 5: Bale Goba
Drive to the town of Bale Goba and visit the local market. Take a short hike to see the beautiful waterfalls and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Return to your lodge for a relaxing evening.
Day 6: Gaysay Grasslands
Drive to the Gaysay Grasslands, where you can see herds of mountain nyala and Menelik's bushbuck. Take a guided hike through the grasslands, stopping to look for bird species like the wattled crane and the blue-winged goose.
Day 7: Bale Mountains NP to Addis Ababa
Return to Addis Ababa, stopping for lunch in Shashemene. Take the afternoon to rest and explore the city, visiting any landmarks you may have missed on your first day. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner before departing the next day.
