Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa
Upon your arrival at Bole International Airport, you will be met by a representative from your tour company and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you can spend the day exploring the vibrant city of Addis Ababa, which is home to numerous museums, galleries, and markets.
Day 2: Addis Ababa – Bahir Dar
After breakfast, you will be driven to Bahir Dar, a beautiful lakeside city known for its scenic beauty and rich history. On the way, you will stop at the Debre Libanos Monastery, which is perched on a cliff overlooking the Jemma River Gorge. You will also visit the Blue Nile Gorge, the largest canyon in Africa.
Day 3: Bahir Dar
Today, you will visit the famous Blue Nile Falls, which are located just a short drive from Bahir Dar. The falls are 400 meters wide and plunge more than 45 meters, creating a spectacular sight. In the afternoon, you will take a boat trip on Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia and the source of the Blue Nile River. You will visit some of the ancient island monasteries on the lake, including Ura Kidane Mihret and Azwa Mariam.
Day 4: Bahir Dar – Gondar
After breakfast, you will drive to Gondar, a city known for its impressive castles and palaces built by Ethiopian emperors in the 17th and 18th centuries. Upon arrival, you will visit the Royal Enclosure, which contains six castles, a palace, and several other buildings. You will also visit the Debre Birhan Selassie Church, which is famous for its beautiful frescoes.
Day 5: Gondar – Lalibela
Today, you will take a flight from Gondar to Lalibela, a town known for its impressive rock-hewn churches. Lalibela is often referred to as the "New Jerusalem" and is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Ethiopia. After checking into your hotel, you will visit the first group of churches, which includes the famous St. George's Church. These churches were carved out of solid rock in the 12th century and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Day 6: Lalibela
Today, you will visit the second group of churches in Lalibela, which includes the Church of Emmanuel, the Church of Mercurios, and the Church of Abba Libanos. These churches are also carved out of solid rock and are adorned with intricate carvings and frescoes. In the afternoon, you can explore the town of Lalibela and visit some of the local markets.
Day 7: Departure from Lalibela
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Lalibela Airport for your departure flight. This concludes your 5-day Northern Ethiopia Historic Route itinerary.
