Day 1: Addis Ababa - Mekele - Hamed Ela
Fly from Addis Ababa to Mekele and meet your local guide at the airport. Drive to Hamed Ela, which is the gateway to the Danakil Depression. On the way, pass through the town of Berhale, where you will obtain permits and a police escort. Continue driving to Dallol, a colorful geothermal area with bubbling hot springs, yellow sulfur fields, and multicolored mineral deposits. After exploring Dallol, drive back to Hamed Ela to spend the night in a basic guesthouse.
Day 2: Hamed Ela - Erta Ale Volcano
After an early breakfast, drive to the base of the Erta Ale Volcano. Begin a 4-5 hour trek to the summit of the volcano, which is one of the few continuously active volcanoes in the world. The trek is challenging but rewarding, and you will be rewarded with stunning views of the lava lake at the top. Spend the night camping on the rim of the volcano, watching the glowing lava from a safe distance.
Day 3: Erta Ale Volcano - Addis Ababa
Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the volcano before beginning the trek back down to the base. Drive back to Mekele and catch a flight back to Addis Ababa. End of tour.
